Cute baby contest turns nasty

described as ugly and one said to be a tot only a mother could love.
The search for the ultimate baby, organised by Bonds – a clothing brand in Australia – held promise of cute children with chubby cheeks and engaging smiles winning the hearts of the nation. But it was the mothers who turned ugly.
Mothers were asked to send in photos of their children to Bond’s Facebook page, but then a glitch occurred with the on-line voting. One mother, Pippa Taylor, was stunned when someone posted a comment about a picture of her Eurasian daughter Lilli that said: “Bonds Australia, not Asia.”
Another mother complained on the Bonds Bumps and Baby Facebook page that a cruel observer had described her daughter as “a child only a mother could love”.
There was more. One baby was called an “ugly ducking”.
“I can’t believe that people could stoop to racist comments,” said Miss Taylor, of Brisbane, after reading the attack against her daughter.
“I think it’s just atrocious,” she told Sydney’s Daily Telegraph.
The war of words over what every mother hoped would result in her baby being found to be the cutest in the country erupted during voting in the People’s Choice part of the competition. Because friends and families used social networking sites for the voting, the website was unable to cope, with the number of entries soaring from 17 000 last year to 52 000 this year.
“The website was made to cope with only about 34 000 entries,” said a Bonds spokesman. – Daily Mail.
