Mpumi Lephoko, who on Saturday night was crowned Miss Mpumalanga after a dramatic beauty pageant.
The 20-year-old third-year psychology Wits University student beat 11 other hopefuls for the crown after what turned out to be a charismatic, courageous and dramatic show.
It might not have been defined as such when the competition started, especially when the girls strutted on stage in traditional clothes and besides the fact that Lephoko was taller than the rest.
It seems no one had paid attention then.
But the drama unfolded when Lephoko appeared on stage in a very short swimsuit dress. The crowd went wild as she strutted with her behind entirely exposed to the crowd.
Despite being aware of this, the beauty, like a soldier on a battlefield, disregarded what was going on around her to accomplish her mission.
“Yes I am aware that my behind was exposed to the crowd but I had to carry on. I could not stop and fix the dress because that would have been unprofessional,” a victorious Lephoko related afterwards.
It could have been a smooth sailing route for the up-and-coming beauty queen had it not been for the dramatic short dress.
Even after the embarrassing scenario, Lephoko was at the end of the queue when leaving the stage as if to please the audience.
And when the girls came back on stage in different costumes, she smiled and walked tall as if nothing had happened.
She even joked afterwards: “I gave the judges what they wanted. I gave them a piece of my beautiful body the way they wanted it but in a beautiful way.”
It has since been reliably learnt that an hour after the incident on stage, Lephoko was on every social network with the picture of her behind for everyone to see.-Sowetan.
