DELTA Beverages yesterday handed over a $2,500 mushroom project it helped kick-start at Zimcare Trust’s Mudavanhu School in Gweru.

The school caters for intellectually challenged children.

Delta Beverages’ Kwekwe malting general manager, Lucas Rungano pledged to expand the project to include drying and packing facilities.

He said the support was in line with the company’s sustainable development thrust, which includes growing livelihoods and ensuring a productive world in enhancing food security.

“We aspire for a productive world where land is used responsibly, where supply is secure and bio diversity is protected,” said Rungano.

“We therefore support sustainable agriculture for sustainability, productivity and social development while reducing environmental impact. The next phase includes expanding the mushroom houses and the establishment of drying facilities and packing for the market.”

The school is already producing for its consumption and local residents who are buying the mushroom at a $1 for 100g.

Zimcare Trust board chairman Obey Dube said the donation will go a long way in raising income to cover costs at the school.

“We appreciate the gesture by Delta Beverages, which only cements our relations, which date back to 30 years ago. This will assist in addressing some of our challenges, which include covering some of our operating costs ands staff salaries,” he said.

School board member, Tinashe Manzungu, said the entity has introduced income generation projects such as poultry and also has a grinding mill.

The school has 36 children, eight teachers and more than 10 support staff.

The special education institution draws children from across the country.
