DELTA Beverages has spent close to $1 million on its bursary programme since 2009 as part of its corporate social responsibility.

The giant beverages manufacturer has committed at least $120,000 per year towards the initiative, which has benefited more than 200 pupils and students since its inception.

Delta human resources director Marshall Pemhiwa said so far the programme has benefited Advanced Level and university students.

The bursary programme targets under-privileged students who perform exceptionally well at Ordinary level and wish to proceed to Advanced level.

He said under the programme, students are chosen from across Zimbabwe with attention given to balanced gender representation in the two-year scholarship programme.

This, Pemhiwa said, had been necessitated by the company’s aspiration to line up with one of their sustainable development imperatives in growing livelihoods and for the company.

The scholarship covers tuition, boarding, uniforms, books and pocket allowance.

Delta has helped top five students each year by awarding them a university scholarship, with some beneficiaries having become doctors, veterinary surgeons, accountants and marketers.

Alongside the bursary programme, the company runs a schools’ assistance programme in which Delta builds classroom blocks at an identified primary school in a rural community.

Under the schools’ assistance programme, more than 50 schools have benefited in the past 15 years.

This year’s beneficiary of the assistance programme is Mutsamvu Primary School in Chimanimani.

Pemhiwa said Delta has also introduced a water and sanitation programme in the selected schools, depending on their needs.
