A MAN from Entumbane suburb in Bulawayo has been arraigned to court after he fatally ran over his tenant’s five-year-old son while reversing his vehicle in the yard.

Dumiso Ncube (44) pleaded guilty to a charge of culpable homicide when he appeared before Western Commonage Magistrate Mr Stephen Ndhlovu and was granted $100 bail to Monday for sentencing.

For the State, Ms Margret Takawira said on September 7 at 7PM, Ncube was reversing a Toyota Gaia into the yard when he hit the deceased Dumoluhle Moyo.

“On September 7, 2016, at around 7PM, the accused person was driving a Toyota Gaia registration number ACR1587, reversing into the yard. The deceased, who is the son of the tenant residing at Ncube’s house, came running into the yard and did not see the reversing vehicle,” said Ms Takawira.

Dumoluhle sustained head injuries and was rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital where he was pronounced dead on admission.

A post-mortem established that the five-year-old died from internal injuries.

Ms Takawira told the court that the accident occurred during the night when visibility was poor.

The vehicle was referred to the Vehicle Inspection Department for inspection and the VID report was produced in court as an exhibit. The report said the vehicle was roadworthy.

Ncube is a holder of a valid driver’s licence.

“It is the State’s case that the accused person was negligent as he failed to keep a lookout in the circumstances and failed to keep the vehicle under proper control,” said Ms Takawira. — @andile_tshuma
