A 35-YEAR-OLD Mangwe shopkeeper will perform 105 hours community service for secretly selling dagga at her boss’s store in a bid to make extra cash for her family.

Memory Dube was found in possession of 0,2 kilogrammes of dagga at Thembalethu General Dealer in Ngwanyana area.

She was convicted of unlawful possession of dangerous drugs by Plumtree magistrate, Gideon Ruvetsa, and sentenced to a wholly suspended three months imprisonment. The sentence was suspended on condition that she performs 105 hours of community service at Madabe Police Station.

In passing the sentence, Ruvetsa warned the shopkeeper against using illegal methods to earn money all in the name of sustaining her family.

He also advised her to quit selling dagga after citing that if she is arrested again she would be thrown behind bars.

Dube told the court that she was selling the dagga from a room behind her employer’s shop in a bid to earn extra cash.

She said the money she was earning as a shopkeeper was hardly enough to cater for her responsibilities as a breadwinner.

Prosecuting, Elisha Mazorodze said Dube had hidden the dagga in an electric oven that was in the shop.

“On July 1, police detectives received information that Dube was in possession of dagga at her workplace. They proceeded to Thembalethu General Dealers at around 6PM.

“Upon searching the shop they recovered loose dagga that was tied in a plastic bag and hidden in an electric oven. The police detectives questioned Dube who admitted owning the dagga, resulting in her immediate arrest,” he said.
