HIGHLANDERS FC chairman Peter Dube has hailed the team’s fans for raising the boys’ morale when they were under attack from newly promoted Chiredzi FC.After a 26th minute lead through a goal by Ozias Zibande at Chishamiso Stadium at Hippo Valley Estates, Highlanders had a lapse in concentration allowing Moses Chunga’s youngsters to creep into the game. Their attacks were far in between though but each time they ventured they looked more dangerous than their more illustrious opponents.

Dube who was among travelling Bosso supporters who besieged Chiredzi and the Hippo Valley Estates  said the supporters carried the day.

“They were fantastic. They gave the players the push at the right time and the boys lifted their game. We urge them to continue their role of being the 12th player.

“We are starting the season and the boys are getting used to each other. Their play will obviously get better with time and we call on the fans to rally behind  them all the time. We have seen that in our three games, the draw against Chapungu, the 4-1 win over Shabanie Mine and the 3-0 triumph over Chiredzi away. There is nothing as uplifting to a player as seeing multitudes of supporters at a match. Those who were in Chiredzi were well behaved and we would like to encourage our fans to continue like this,” said Dube.

The Highlanders chairman said with the encouraging start to the season, they were looking forward to a good crowd at home against Hwange on Sunday.

“We depend on gatetakings to augment the sponsorship. We would like to call on the fans to come and watch the team play entertaining football,” said Dube.

Hwange and Highlanders are tied on seven points after three points with goal aggregate separating the two which has seen Highlanders leading the log.

The coalminers will not be pushovers and will want to prove that their run so far is not a fluke. They have the right mix of young and old players all bonded by the desire to bring glory to the Colliery.

Hwange will bank on returnee from injury Rodwell Chinyengetere who has been a revelation to the side.

Highlanders have enough depth to trouble them and actually go all the way to win the championship if they address their combinations and complacency challenges.
