Dynamos, Harare City in Chibuku final

RODRECK MUTUMA 1Mehluli Sibanda in Zvishavane
Chapungu 0-1 Dynamos
JUST like he did in last week Sunday’s win over Chicken Inn in a league match in Bulawayo, Roderick Mutuma was again the Dynamos hero by firing the Harare giants into the final of the Chibuku Super Cup in a hard fought victory over Chapungu at Mandava Stadium in Zvishavane yesterday.

Mutuma’s second half strike ensured that DeMbare set up a date with neighbours Harare City in the final to be staged at the end of this month.

Harare City trounced ZPC Kariba 4-1 in the other semi-final game played at the same venue on Saturday.

Chapungu were the more dominant side in yesterday’s encounter, but could not convert their dominance into goals.

Dynamos were more subdued for the better part of the match, but grabbed their opportunity in the second half.

The Glamour Boys were the first to show attacking intent with Mutuma shooting over the bar in the fourth minute inside the box after Chapungu goalkeeper Roy Mazingi had done well to come off his line to thwart a raid by Takesure Chinyama.

Dynamos defender Blessing Moyo knocked Chapungu captain Philip Marufu on the back of the head in an off-the-ball incident in the seventh minute, but referee Norman Matemera surprisingly flashed the yellow card after being informed of the incident by fourth official Ruzive Ruzive instead of sending him off.

Gift Phiri’s shot for Chapungu went just wide in the 19th minute. Two minutes later, Dynamos’ midfielder Carlos Rusere’s grounder was too weak to cause any problems for Mazingi.

Marufu earned himself a yellow card in the 28th minute for simulation after going down inside the box unchallenged.

A minute later, Mutuma guided his header wide from an Ocean Mushure corner.

Chapungu continued to dictate the pace of the game and William Ngonya let fly a shot that was too hot to handle for Dynamos goalkeeper Tatenda Mukuruva, who spilled it, but there was no one for the Gweru side to finish it off eight minutes before half time.

Chapungu continued to pressurise Dynamos after the break with Tavarwisa doing well to beat his marker on the left and deliver a perfect cross into the box that Tineyi Chitora failed to connect. Chapungu were left to regret their failure to find the net as they were punished eight minutes into the second half by Mutuma, who sent the ball into the roof from inside the box after the defenders reacted slowly in clearing the danger from a Mushure corner kick.

The goal seemed to spur Dynamos on as a few minutes after scoring, they were back in attack, but Chitiyo’s shot drew a superb save from Mazingi and Mutuma’s attempt off the rebound was pushed out for a corner kick.

Mukuruva did well on the hour mark to tip the ball over the bar from a Chitora attempt at goal. In the 73rd minute, Mutuma was denied a second goal by Mazingi, who blocked the striker’s attempt with his feet.

Three minutes later, substitute Ralph Kawondera could have added to Dynamos’ tally had he not headed Godknows Murwira’s cross wide. Linyama was called into action as he blocked Phiri’s dangerous cross for a corner 10 minutes before the end.

The set piece was pushed over the bar by Mukuruva.

With three minutes to go, Tavarwisa went on a solo run only to fire wide. Gift Phiri wasted a glorious opportunity to take the match into penalties when he shot over the bar in the last minute as Dynamos held on for a win.
