Econet sets record straight

LISTED telecommunications giant Econet Wireless Zimbabwe will announce its financial results for the year within the next coming three months contrary to some online reports that it had already done so, an official said.

Several online publications on Wednesday reported that Econet had posted a turnover of $752 million for the 12 months to February this year.

“Our financial year ends in February and the results are published within three months from the end of the financial year,” Rangarirai Mberi, Econet’s spokesperson said yesterday.

“We realised several publications ran the story, which originated from a certain website. Actually the report that was given is not news as it shows results for last year.”

The report had said the company, which also owns Mutare Bottling Company and Steward Bank, has generated $119.4 million in profits after tax over the same period with $20 million of the profit set aside for dividend payments and the balance set for reinvestment in the business and paying off loans from international banks.

Econet is the leading telecoms firm in Zimbabwe with the largest subscriber base.

The company has introduced several modern product services such as broadband, mobile money service, Eco-Cash, Eco-Health, Eco-farmer, EconetCar, EcoSchool and EconetSolar.
