The ruling party Zanu-PF said its thrust now is on addressing developmental and economic issues as opposed to just politicking. Addressing the 107th ordinary session of the party’s Central Committee at the Zanu-PF headquarters on Thursday, the party President and First Secretary, Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa, said the party was focusing more on productivity as it moved away from too much politicking.

Cde Mnangagwa said the party should now concern itself with bread and butter issues that affect the people. “The party at all levels must give due attention to the developmental and economic issues within their wards, districts and provinces,” said Cde Mnangagwa.

The President said party leaders should be true servants of the people and should therefore be moved by matters that affect the people. He said there should be a symbiotic relationship between the party and the Government ministries, departments and agencies at grass root level.

Cde Mnangagwa who has since directed Government Ministers to come up with priority projects that have visible impact on the ground, is aware of the people’s high expectations. The coming in of Cde Mnangagwa marked a new beginning and people have every reason to be optimistic that the new dispensation will find solutions to challenges facing the nation.

The President has already told his team that there is a need to hit the ground running. In his State of the Nation address two days before his resignation, the former president Cde Robert Mugabe admitted that there was a crisis in the country and conceded that concerns raised by the Zimbabwe Defence Forces and citizens relating to the state of the economy were genuine.

“As I address you, I am aware of the whole range of concerns which have come from you all citizens of our great nation and which thus deserve our untrammelled attention” said Cde Mugabe.

What is encouraging is that the country is already witnessing positive changes since the new Government’s first Cabinet meeting ten days ago. Cde Mnangagwa said productivity across all sectors must be religiously encouraged at all levels. He said communities must always be kept abreast of opportunities availed through various Government interventions.

The farmers demonstrated last season that Zimbabwe has the resources and capacity to turn around the economy when they recorded a bumper harvest. The challenge therefore is on all sectors of the economy to emulate the farmers’ hard work.

Cde Mnangagwa has already said under the new era, corruption, incompetency, dereliction of duty, laziness, social and cultural decadency are not tolerated. We have said in the past that those Cabinet Ministers that fail to deliver on their mandate should be shown the door.

We, however, have no reason to doubt that Cde Mnangagwa is working with a winning team of ministers who will deliver on their targets of implementing projects in the 100-day cycles set by Government.
