THE committee spearheading efforts to open Ekusileni Medical Centre in Bulawayo is set to invite potential investors early next month after embarking on consultations on specialist services to be offered at the institution.

The consultations will see patients from the region accessing specialist services if the institution opens its doors.

The Government has taken over the running of the hospital with Matabeleland North provincial medical director, Dr Nyasha Masuka, heading the team tasked to ensure that the hospital opens.

Dr Masuka said there were ongoing discussions on the specialist services to be offered by the hospital, a brainchild of the late Vice President Dr Joshua Nkomo.

He said they want to ensure that they offer specialist services that have seen locals going to other countries.

“As of now there are ongoing discussions on clinical specialities that the hospital will offer because we don’t want to duplicate what is already being offered at local hospitals.

We are trying to figure out the specialist needs that see our patients going to solicit out of the country. Those are the ones that we want to offer,” said Dr Masuka.

He said after the consultations, advertisements would be flighted early February for private investors to come and bid.

Dr Masuka said in the meantime they were also working on key facilities that are not available at the hospital.

“We are also making final touches on key facilities that a health institution cannot operate without such as the mortuary, incinerator and laundry among others,” he said.

Announcing the takeover by Government last year, Health and Child Care Minister, Dr David Parirenyatwa, said they had opted for a Public Private Partnership to start the project.

Dr Parirenyatwa said all legal wrangles and issues with the National Social Security Authority (NSSA) had been dealt with.

He said keys for the hospital had been handed over to the Ministry.
