PROPERTY worth about $10,000 was destroyed after a room in a house in Bulawayo’s Entumbane suburb was gutted by fire on Saturday night. The fire is suspected to have been caused by an electrical fault. Rumbidzai Mabishe, 32, the landlady, said the incident took place at around 9PM. “The fire started soon after my sister switched on the refrigerator.

“We heard a crackling sound and rushed there only to discover that the sofas had caught fire. We screamed for help and fortunately our neighbours rushed to our rescue.”

“Sofas, refrigerator, bed, television set, DVD, wardrobe, blankets and clothes were lost in the fire. We will have to rewire the whole house as well as our neighbour’s house whose wiring was also affected. Their house, however, didn’t catch fire,” said Mabishe.

She said they immediately called the Fire Brigade who quickly attended to the scene although the neighbours had managed to put out the fire.

“The fire brigade also tried their best to ensure that the fire was completely doused. The fire fighting team waited for the Zesa team to arrive since the cause of the fire was due to an electrical fault. However, the Zesa team didn’t come that very night. They came at around 11AM after the Ward 11 councillor called them,” she said.
