seriously injured a senior tutor at the institution after he had failed an examination, it has been alleged.
Police yesterday said they were investigating the matter while hospital staff said they were handling the matter internally.
Sources said principal tutor Mrs Irene Sambo was stand-ing at her gate talking to new students when the disgruntled man drove into her.
It is alleged that after reversing his car into Mrs Sambo, he re-positioned himself and ran over her again.
Mrs Sambo has since been discharged from hospital and was yesterday at home recuperating. The student is understood to have fled and has not been seen since.
When The Herald visited her, Mrs Sambo said she had been hurt in an “accident” while a woman who was caring for her claimed that she was arthritic.
However, there was no explanation as to why she had a plaster cast on her right leg and how this was related in any way to arthritis.
Harare Central Hospital acting chief executive officer Mr George Vera dismissed the allegations as a rumour, but went on to say they were investigating the matter internally.
“We do not know that she was hit by a car,” said Mr Vera, before saying they were handling the issue internally.
Sources at the institution said Mrs Sambo was opening her gate for new students who wanted to arrange their accommodation when the alleged offence was committed.
“She was standing at her gate with the students from Gutu when she was hit by the car. The car was driven by a student who we understand was angry because he had failed an exam.
“We could not get the vehicle’s number plates because he quickly drove away,” said one student.
Another source said the running over could have been intentional because the person driving the vehicle hit Mrs Sambo twice while pretending to reverse.
“If it was a mistake, the person should have stopped the first time. But he reversed a second time and hit her again before fleeing the scene,” he said.
Mrs Sambo suffered multiple injuries and was rushed to the hospital’s casualty department before being admitted for several days.
Mrs Sambo told this paper, “I do not know anything about what you are saying, I was injured elsewhere.”
She had a plaster cast from her toes to her knee.
Police spokesperson Inspector James Sabau could not provide further details on the matter and said it was still under investigation.
Last week, another student at the institution, Ignatious Zuze, was arrested on charges of assaulting Herald journalists who were on duty.
He allegedly damaged a camera and a company vehicle.
