CLOSE to 100 female golfers from across Africa are expected to take part in the 2014 edition of the Zimbabwe Ladies Golf Union (ZLGU) Open Strokeplay Championship set for the Royal Harare Golf Club over the weekend.
ZLGU publicity officer, Evelyn Maisvoreva said her committee has been busy with preparations and was confident that the ladies’ prime golfing event will be a huge success.

“We are almost there with our preparations.  The fairways and greens at the Royal Harare are in perfect condition and golfers are going to enjoy their golf,” she said.

The ladies will be out to try and wrestle the title from last year’s winner Angel Eaton from Tanzania who hit a superb 231 points to land gold. Just like last year, Batsirai Tilowakuti will be the local favourite to challenge for honours as well as Yolanda Mubaiwa.

The championship and A Division players will tee off on Friday while the B and C Divisions get to the green on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

Championship players are handicapped between 0-11 while the A Division is for players on 12-18 handicaps.
B Division players are handicapped between 19-26 with 27-36 handicaps set to compete in the C Division.

The Championship and A Divisions will take part in a 54-hole battle over three-days while the B and C divisions are set to play 36 holes.
Last year, the A Division’s Budget Harvey Trophy was won by Loveness Chandavengerwa on 263, with Chola Oka counting out Nicki Lashbrook after they had finished tied on 271.

In the B Division, Bulawayo’s Rodna Mutasa was the winner on 178 while Nina Geyser was runner-up on 187.
Liz Cuerden on 74 was the winner in the “C” Division’s Civil Cup, with junior golf player Margaret Nyamukondiwa the runner-up on 68.
