A 30-YEAR-OLD man from Binga nearly lost his life after he was stabbed on the collar bone when he tried to stop a fight between his brother and a neighbour during a beer drink.

Felix Lunga from Mukohwe Village under Chief Sinamusenga was rushed to Binga District Hospital bleeding profusely from the neck following the incident that took place on September 26.

Mr Lunga sustained a deep cut on the neck and was treated at the hospital following the assault by Golden Mwinde (22).

Mwinde of neighbouring Chikobe Village in the same area was recently convicted of attempted murder by Hwange regional magistrate Mr Collete Ncube.

He pleaded guilty to the charge but claimed that he acted in self-defence.

“I was fighting with his younger brother when the complainant came and intervened. I thought he wanted to team up with his younger brother and I went to take a kitchen knife to defend myself,” he said.

Mwinde was initially sentenced to four years in jail but will serve an effective two years after the magistrate suspended half of the sentence for five years on condition of good behaviour.

The State’s case was that Mwinde and Mr Lunga were drinking traditional beer at Mr Jethro Mwinde’s homestead on September 26 at around 4PM.

Mwinde had a misunderstanding with the complainant’s brother Mr MacLephone Mutanga over an issue that was not mentioned.

The complainant then tried to restrain the two from fighting and Mwinde went into a nearby hut and returned armed with a kitchen knife which he used to stab Mr Lunga on the collar bone.

The court heard that Mr Lunga sustained a deep cut and was rushed to Tyanga Clinic before being transferred to Binga District Hospital where he was treated.

A report was made to the police leading to Mwinde’s arrest. The kitchen knife was not recovered.
