The team’s coach, Silandulelwe Mabhena said yesterday that the team faced serious financial challenges and as a result was failing to raise money for transport and other costs.

The fourth placed Gwanda High School club with 21 points is the only team which can overtake log leaders ZRP Shining Stars if they win their remaining games of the season.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police side have played all their 18 games and are sitting on 32 points.

Gwanda Giants won 10 of the 12 games they have played, losing one and drawing the other.
Mabhena said Gwanda High School which was sponsoring the team had indicated that it could not continue due to financial constraints.

She called on the corporate world to come to the team’s rescue urgently before they were forced to withdraw from the league.

“The school no longer has money to continue sponsoring the club and this means we might find ourselves pulling out of the league if we do not get another sponsor.

“We are therefore appealing to well-wishers to come on board and help us,” Mabhena said.
Lynois Ndlovu the organising secretary for Gwanda Netball League also appealed to companies and individuals to assist the team which he said has talented players.

“There is a lot of talent in that club (Gwanda Giants) and it is very sad that they cannot continue participating. They have won almost all the games they have played.

“Actually this year one of the girls in the team (Beatitude Ngwenya) participated in the National Youth Games in Bindura and she even went as far as Namibia for the Confederation of Schools Sport Association of Southern Africa (COSSASA),” said Ndlovu.

Meanwhile, Shining Stars of Gwanda have been promoted to the Netball First Division after winning the provincial league title.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police outfit put up a remarkable performance this season and now find themselves a step away from the Super League.

Coach Lynois Ndlovu could not contain his excitement about the promotion and said the development would cultivate a spirit of competitiveness in the region.

“I am extremely excited about the development. All along the ladies were taking the sport as a social activity but now that something like this has happened it means they will be more serious  that more clubs in the region need to come on board and register to play in Division Two as sport gave them an avenue to be healthy mentally and physically.
