A Zaka teacher allegedly hanged himself after savagely assaulting his wife and leaving her for dead, accusing her of failing to prepare fish well.

Charles Chipisa of Gwara Village under Chief Bota and a teacher at Zibwowa Primary School, is said to have concluded he had killed his wife after punching and kicking her until she lost consciousness.

His relatives told The Chronicle that Chipisa panicked and went on to hang himself from the trusses of his dining room. His wife later regained consciousness only to find him already dead.

Acting Masvingo police spokesperson Kudakwashe Dehwa yesterday confirmed the incident, which occurred on Saturday at around 4PM.

“I can confirm receiving a report of sudden death by hanging from Zaka from Chief Bota area but details are still sketchy,” said Asst Insp Dehwa.

According to a cousin, Gilbert Chipisa, Chipisa flew into a rage and rained blows on Memory Chipunza – whose age could not be ascertained – until she became unconscious.

He was angry that his wife failed to prepare the fish in the way that he preferred.

“On Saturday at around 4PM, Charles had a misunderstanding with Memory over fish that he had bought. He had bought fish from a local fisherman and gave them to his wife to cook,” said Gilbert.

He said all hell broke loose when Chipisa accused his wife of having failed to properly prepare the fish.

“An argument ensued leading to Chipisa assaulting Chipunza with clenched fists and booted feet. She fell down but Charles was not deterred and continued to assault her until she became unconscious,” he said.

On realising that she had lost consciousness, Gilbert said, Chipisa disappeared from the scene, only to be found hanging in the dining room at his homestead.

Gilbert said Chipunza was rushed to Musiso Hospital where she was treated and discharged.
