flag high when they take part at the annual Ryushin-kan International Tournament in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, early next month.
Malvern Chimusoro, Eugene Shaya-newako, Brian Kupara, Tungamirai Madzimbamuto and Paddington Musho-nha will be face karatekas from Ghana, Botswana, Nigeria and South Africa at the Utenhage Sports Centre on May 6 and 7.
The five, who train at Mai Musodzi Hall in Mbare, are confident of winning medals for their nation in their respective categories as they participate in this tournament for the second.
Chimusoro claimed silver with Kupara collecting gold at the previous edition.
Musariri said the various tournaments that his lieutenants have competed in have toughened them to hold their own against anyone.
“We have been consistent with training and being involved in tournaments like the Glen View Kyokushinkai Karate Tournament hosted by the Kyokushin Union of Zimbabwe.
“Madzimbamuto managed to collect silver there in the Open heavyweight category
“I am confident that we will bring medals for our country and this will also expose our karatekas to a very high standard of play,” said Musariri, who holds a 3rd dan black belt.
Team captain, Chimusoro, said in 2009 they did not know the rules of the game and were at a disadvantage.
“The World Karate federation rules continue to change after each and every tournament and I must say it was unfortunate then that we did not know anything.
“But we managed to claim gold and silver.
“This year, with all the knowledge and training we have received, I am sure we are going to do much better,” he said.
Madzimbamuto will feature in the Under-75kg category, Chimusoro will fight in the Under-70, Shayanewako in the Under-65kg and Kupara in the Under-60kg category.
