THE Gwanda Municipality has made a U-turn on its decision to ban food caravans after realising the need to support its people in making a living, the mayor, Councillor Knowledge Ndlovu, has said.Clr Ndlovu said the municipality would renew licences for individuals who meet the local authority’s hygiene standards.

“Yes, the municipality has since resolved to allow food caravan businesses to continue operating. We noted that these people are also trying to make a living and need our support as the municipality,” he said.

Last month the municipality ordered food caravans to cease operations saying there were major health concerns raised in relation to their operations.

Clr Ndlovu said the decision to outlaw food caravans was a council decision although the ban had initially been understood to affect all other urban local authorities.

Other local authorities did not implement the food caravan ban.

Clr Ndlovu said health inspectors moved  around to check if food caravans were operating in an environment that did not pose danger to public health safety.

“Those that will meet the health requirements will have their licences renewed,” he said.
