A FOUR-YEAR-OLD girl from Gwanda is battling for life at Mpilo Central Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit after being hit by a vehicle along the Bulawayo-Beitbridge Road.

The accident happened in Gwanda at around 12PM on Thursday.

Regina Sithole of Maphane Compound in Gwanda sustained serious head injuries and was rushed to Gwanda District Hospital before being transferred to Mpilo Central Hospital.

A police source said Rocky Ndlovu from Pelandaba suburb in Bulawayo was driving the vehicle that hit the girl.

Matabeleland South police spokesperson Inspector Philisani Ndebele said investigations were underway.

“I can confirm that we received a report of a serious road traffic accident. A man hit a four-year-old girl who was crossing the road behind a vehicle that was stationary. The driver of a Sprinter was allegedly speeding and failed to quickly notice the young girl who came from behind a stationary car, thereby hitting her,” he said.

“This is yet another accident that seems to have been caused by human error. We continue to warn motorists to observe safety regulations.

“When one sees a stationary vehicle they should always anticipate that someone may get out of the car from any side or someone may appear from behind or the front of the vehicle, therefore, caution should be exercised.”

Insp Ndebele said speeding was a crime, hence motorists should always be on high alert when driving.
