French-US ‘plot’ pushing I. Coast towards civil war: Gbagbo

“There will perhaps be internal disorder, a civil war in Ivory Coast, because we will not allow our rights and our institutions to be trampled upon,” he told France’s Le Monde daily.

Gbagbo denounced what he called “the incredible, inexplicable and unjustifiable positions” of France and the United States, which have led the international community’s recognition of Alassane Ouattara as president.

“These countries are pushing (us) towards an internal confrontation,” he told Le Monde, adding that the two countries’ bid to have Ouattara confirmed as the winner of last month’s election was a “plot” against him.

Several international leaders, including UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, have warned Gbagbo’s stubbornness could plunge Ivory Coast back into civil war. A West African bloc has meanwhile threatened military action against him.-AFP
