BULAWAYO City FC have given Dynamos the green light to fundraise for their fans that survived a fatal road accident at the beginning of the month when they face off at Barbourfields Stadium on Saturday. Seven Dynamos supporters died on the spot, while two, who were part of the 16 that sustained serious injuries, died in hospital. Bulawayo-based Dynamos’ supporters intend to raise funds for survivors of the accident that occurred on June 11 when a Sprinter they were travelling in burst a rear tyre, veered off the road and rolled three times close to Battlefields on the Harare-Bulawayo Highway.

The fans were travelling to Gweru to watch Dynamos play Chapungu at Ascot Stadium.

Dynamos make their third trip of the season to Bulawayo on Saturday for a date with City at Barbourfields. In their first visit of the year, Dynamos were beaten 0-3 by champions Chicken Inn and won 1-0 against Tsholotsho on their second trip to the City of Kings.

It remains to be seen whether they will be able to get the better of City. City chairman Jerry Sibanda said they had granted the former champions’ Bulawayo Supporters’ Chapter permission to fundraise at the stadium before Saturday’s kickoff.

“What befell the Dynamos family was tragic and when their supporters came to us asking for permission to do some fundraising inside the stadium, we gave them the go ahead in the spirit of ubuntu. We’ve told them that people who’re collecting their donations should be done by 2.30PM. This means football lovers coming for the game and wish to participate in the fundraising should come early,” said Sibanda.

He also indicated that City would not be hiking gate charges for the game. Entry into the stadium has been pegged at $3 for rest of the ground, $5 for the VIP wings and $10 for the VIP.

Dynamos’ Bulawayo Supporters’ Chapter patron Sunungurai Bhiza thanked City and encouraged their members to support the drive.

“We’re grateful to Bulawayo City FC for supporting this initiative and we hope that Dynamos and football supporters will donate towards this worthy cause. The money realised will cater for the hospital bills and other medical expenses for the supporters who survived the accident.

“Saturday’s fundraising has been blessed by the club’s executive and for transparency purposes, those who can’t make it to the stadium may transfer cash to this EcoCash Biller code 24490, whose agent’s name is Prosper Mushangwe. They may also EcoCash their contributions to 0777631529,” said Bhiza.
