Ashes to Ashes actor, Tato Molamu, who played Nicholas in the now defunct Generations, says getting fired from the soapie was actually a blessing in disguise as many doors have opened for him.

Molamu was part of the 16 actors whose contracts were terminated by the soapie’s executive director Mfundi Vundla after they staged a strike.

“After I was fired, I started doing a lot of things that I wanted to do like presenting. I secured a presenter’s job on SABC 2’s Behind the Wall and also got to focus on my business. I’ve a company called Kitwe Media that I’m focusing on,” said Molamu.

The actor, together with Motlatsi Matshafa (Sechaba on Isidingo) was in Bulawayo over the weekend to shoot clips for the Arthur Evans Show – a new local lifestyle magazine.

Molamu said after leaving Generations, he realised the soapie had actually made his acting career stagnant.

“Generations took up most of my time making it hard for me to focus on many other things. But the exposure I got from there made it easy for me to interact with other likeminded people for business proposals.”

Besides featuring on the new local production, Molamu said he had visited Zimbabwe for the first time, to finalise a script of another local romantic movie which will be produced by Trey Ncube.

He said the movie that will be shot in Zimbabwe and South Africa aims to unite Africans.

“The romantic movie aims to show people that we’ve similarities and differences as Africans that we should celebrate, not fight over. We’re trying to break fights such as the recent xenophobia attacks by uniting people through film,” said Molamu.

The actor, who returned to South Africa last weekend, said he enjoyed his stay in Zimbabwe and was surprised to see that people here followed South African soapies religiously.

“It’s interesting and encouraging that people outside our country actually follow and watch our soapies. It makes acting worthwhile.”
