Harare Bureau

ZIMBABWEAN professional golfer Brendon de Jonge returned to the field in the PGA Tour season-opening Frys.com Open at the Silverado Country Club North in Napa in California yesterday.

The $6 million Frys.com Open is the first event of the 2014 -2015 PGA Tour season and will come at a time the Zimbabwean had an average 2013-14 season.

De Jonge will be part of the strong field of 144 players who will be gunning for the $1,080,000 winners’ cheque in what will be his first tournament since the Deutsche Bank Championship in early September.

De Jonge was to play along with United States duo of Cameron Tringale and Jim Renner.

The Harare-born golfer heads into the new season seeking not just his first PGA Tour win but also be hoping to play well and earn a place in next year’s Presidents Cup competition.

De Jonge, made his Presidents Cup debut last year, would need to be part of Nick Price’s Internationals squad for the next year’s biennial competition to be held in South Korea again. De Jonge will head into the tournament ranked 96th in the world.

Meanwhile Mark Williams was the only Zimbabwean player in the Big Easy Tour’s Sun Boardwalk Golf Challenge at Humewood Golf Club.
Williams failed to make it through the three rounds as he missed the cut after carding a 79 and 78 for a total 13-over-par.
