Government loses US$1,7m in tollgate ticket scam

Victor Nyathi and Memory Martin, believed to be the brains behind the scandal, are now being tried separately at the Harare Magistrates’ Courts.
Nyathi (25) is alleged to have stolen and distributed tollgate tickets valued at US$1 695 750 from different tollgates.

It is alleged that he connived with officers manning the gates to issue the stolen tickets to motorists and they would share the money.
Nyathi, who was stationed at Zimra’s Kurima House offices in Harare, was arrested after Martin was found with some of the stolen tickets and implicated him.

Other suspects are yet to be arrested.
He was last Friday arraigned before Harare regional magistrate Mr Morgen Nemadire, who remanded him in custody to Tuesday for bail ruling.

Nyathi was not asked to plead.
His lawyer, Mr Emmanuel Nyambuya, applied for bail, which the prosecution strenuously opposed.
