Only four major referral hospitals in the country namely Parirenyatwa and Harare Central in the capital, United Bulawayo Hospitals and Mpilo Central in Bulawayo have management boards.
In an interview yesterday, Dr Madzorera said the move was aimed at improving accountability in the handling of health funds as well as improving the country’s health delivery system.

He said the ministry had since appointed a seven-member management board for Gweru Provincial Hospital.
“The Ministry’s aim is to have management boards in all the country’s hospitals. We have  started with provincial hospitals and we will soon be moving to district hospitals,” said Dr Madzorera.

He said the appointment of the hospital management boards was part of a broader scheme to introduce efficiency and professionalism in the country’s health delivery system.
“According to the Health Services Act, all hospitals should have management boards and the appointment of these boards is thus in line with the Act.

“We are targeting all hospitals, including district hospitals.
“We will also appoint management boards in mission hospitals but in consultation with the authorities running those hospitals,” said Dr Madzorera.

He said the mandate of management boards in every hospital was to improve governance and accountability in the day-to-day running of health institutions.
“The boards will also make sure that standard health service delivery systems are maintained,” said Dr Madzorera.

The seven management board members for Gweru Provincial Hospital appointed by the ministry are board chairman, Mr Walter Nemassasi, Dr John Elwanger, the hospital’s medical director, Dr Fabian Mashingaidze, Mr Obert Tachi Ncube, a long serving nurse at Gweru Provincial Hospital, Ms Angie Katiro, prominent Gweru lawyer,

Mr Brian Dube and Mrs Prisca Chard.
