FORMER champions Gunners grabbed their first win at their new home ground when they edged Black Mambas in a balanced Castle Premier Soccer League match at Lafarge yesterday.
Leonard Fiyado’s goal in the 38th minute was enough for the home team to collect maximum points.
Fiyado shot from close range inside the box when he received a free-kick from Hardlife Zvirekwi to beat Black Mambas’ goalkeeper Didymus Chakabva.
Black Mambas, who failed to utilise numerous scoring opportunities that came their way, could have equalised in the 71st minutes through Peter Kachirika but Prosper Chigumba, the Gunners goalminder, saved his shot.
Gunners dominated most of the second half but failed to add to their goal tally.
Gunners’ assistant coach George Madira was impressed by his charges’ performance.
“My boys played well and everyone is over the moon. It’s our first win at Lafarge and we desperately needed the three points. Obviously in our next match we want to collect three more points.
“We have always said we will win because most of the games we were losing because we were unlucky as we dominated most of the games and we just needed to work with our players to score more goals,” said Madira.
His counterpart Martin Bonongwe, whose team suffered a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Dynamos last Thursday, was a disappointed man after yesterday’s match.
“I think the game was balanced but they (Gunners) took their chances and we could not utilise the opportunities that we got.
“Our major problem is scoring and I feel in the second half we got more chances.
“The rate at which we are losing points is not good for us and it’s high time we start collecting points. I am very disappointed,” said Bonongwe.
