GWANDA Municipality is locked in a legal wrangle with prominent Bulawayo businessman Ernest Marima over a debt of more than $38,000 in unpaid rates and water charges.

Gwanda Municipality has filed summons at the Bulawayo High Court seeking an order that compels Marima to settle $38,402,93 accrued over “a considerable period.”

Marima is a property magnate, who owns several buildings in Bulawayo.

The debt is in respect of Marima’s several properties in Gwanda.

The municipality, in its plaintiff’s declaration, accuses Marima of neglecting to pay the money despite acknowledging the debt.

“The defendant holds an account with the Gwanda Municipality in respect of various properties for water consumption and defendant has also neglected to pay leading to the accrual of arrears,” said the council lawyers.

Gwanda Municipality seeks an order that compels Marima to pay the debt including a six percent interest rate per annum calculated from the date of summons to the date of full payment and the cost of suit.

Marima has not yet filed opposing papers to challenge the summons.

Last year, the Bulawayo City Council also dragged Marima to court over a debt of $75,257,58 accrued over a five-year period.

The debt emanated from unpaid rates and water charges in respect of Marima’s properties situated along Fife Street.
