A HANDCUFFED suspect in multiple house breaking cases left a police officer splattered with blood after he allegedly jumped in front of a haulage truck which crushed him to death. Peter Gusha Mufandirwa, 31, apparently preferring death to jail, dived into the path of the truck at 10AM along the Masvingo–Harare Road last Thursday.

Police said he had been hiding out at his rural home in Bikita, where he was finally arrested.

Witnesses told The Chronicle Mufandirwa’s mangled body was put into a metal coffin by police and removed from the scene.

“At around 10AM three police officers arrived at Croco Motors where travellers board lifts going to Harare.

“They were with a handcuffed man. The man suddenly jumped in front of a haulage truck,” said Moses Moyo.

“Blood and bits of flesh splashed on one of the officers as he tried to pull Mufandirwa from the road. The truck literally crushed him to a pulp.”

Acting Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa confirmed the incident.

Mufandirwa, he said, of Village 15 Manyuchi, Devure Range in Bikita, was arrested at his home area in connection with a number of housebreaking cases in Harare’s Glenview suburb.

“He was in handcuffs as three police officers took him to Croco Motors to get transport to Harare.

“They later moved further near the industrial site to look for transport. While they were flagging down lifts, Mufandirwa suddenly threw himself under the wheels of a moving haulage truck and was crushed instantly. He died on the spot,” said Asst Insp Dehwa.

A report was made to Masvingo Central police who attended the scene and took the disfigured lifeless body to Masvingo General Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem.
