THE Hockey Association of Zimbabwe (HAZ) has resorted to engaging parents of the 42-member men and women’s teams for the Junior African Championships to assist in raising $50,000 needed by association to send the squad to Windhoek, Namibia, next month.

The 10-day championships are scheduled for March 18-28 and will also double up as qualifiers for the Junior World Cup to be held in India and Chile in December.

HAZ vice-president Humphrey Chigwedere said: “We have engaged many corporate sponsors, but there haven’t been any responses. As a result, we have had to engage parents of the athletes to see if they are capable of pitching in with some help. I am confident that we will succeed and beat the deadline to travel for the championships”.

The winners and runners-up of the Windhoek men’s championships will automatically qualify for the World Cup and join 14 other teams from Europe, Asia, Oceania and Pan America.

Winners of the ladies’ championships will qualify for the World Cup and also join 14 other teams.
