AN unopposed Peter Dube was confirmed as the Highlanders FC chairman with ex-club’s medic and manager Emmet Ndlovu convincingly winning the secretary’s position at yesterday’s elections, shrugging off the challenge from three other contestants.

The elections were held at Highlanders Clubhouse with 229 bona-fide members casting their votes for the secretary-general and committee member.

Ndlovu polled 111 votes with Innocent Batsani Ncube coming second with 51 while Njabulo Bango was a distant third with 27 votes. Donald Ndebele got 26 votes with Pilate Mahlangu managing 13.

In his post-election interview, Ndlovu said the club’s success was a collective effort and promised to work with every member, including those he beat to the post.

“I owe it to the Highlanders people and I promise to add value to this great institution. I didn’t have a manifesto because I know the club already has a crafted a strategic planning document and together with the executive we’ll work towards achieving goals that are in that document,” Ndlovu said.

“I believe that the spirit of unity must prevail and if there’s anything that I’m, it’s being a unifier. Together we’ll turn Highlanders into a great institution.”

He pledged to uphold corporate governance values during his tenure.

Yesterday’s elections didn’t attract a big turnout compared to the 2012 one which had 353 members. There were members from as far as Harare, Victoria Falls, Plumtree and other parts of the country.

Voting was done under a peaceful atmosphere and voters accepted the results.

Wisdom Mabhena, who served as the club’s committee member between 2009-12, bounced back into the executive beating incumbent Charles ‘Six-One’ Moyo, Faith Silandulo Dube and Cleopas Ngano.

Mabhena won the committee member’s seat after getting 96 votes with Moyo polling 57 while Faith got 44. Ngano had 32 votes.

A handover-takeover meeting is set for this evening at the Highlanders offices.

Meanwhile, the club’s chairman said he is looking forward to a fruitful working relationship with his new executive.

“Obviously I’m happy and honoured to be given another chance to lead the club. It’s the Highlanders system that has seen it fit for me to continue in office. Obviously our wishes can’t overstep the vision of the club and I’m looking forward to a fruitful relationship with the newly constituted executive,” said Dube.
