ZIMBABWE hockey club champions Hippo Valley beat local rivals Eradicators 5-2 in the Hockey Africa Cup of Club Champions at Kumalo Hockey Stadium in Bulawayo yesterday.Hippo valley coach Tongai Mukwekwa said it was a tough match and was happy with the win from his boys.

Mukwekwa said their hopes of improving on their 2012 performance are still alive considering that they have only lost one match from the four games they have played.

Hippo Valley have played four matches during which they have won two matches against Eradicators and Nigerian Police Machines, drew one against the Ghanaian Trustee and fell to the tournament defending champions the Egyptian Sharkias.

Meanwhile, in the ladies’ category, Bulawayo Athletic Club shared the spoils with Nigerian side Heartlands in a match that ended 3-3 in regulation time.

The BAC ladies have played three games during which they beat Tanzanian ladies’ club Twende 10-0, drew with Heartlands and lost to 3-0 to Orange – the defending champions.

BAC captain Nicky Watson said they had a good start and are now focused on progressing to the semi- finals.

Other teams that are competing in the tournament are Kenya women’s clubs Orange and Strathmore, Nigeria’s Police Machines (men) and Heartlands (women), Ghana GRA and Ghana Police (men and women) and Trustees (men).

Malawi will be sending Genetrix (men and women) while Tanzania will provide only a women’s team, Twende.

Ladies: Strathmore 12-0 Genetrix, Twende 0-9 Orange, BAC 3-3 Heartlands

Men: Trustees 4-0 Police Machines, Hippo-Valley 5-2 Eradicators, Egypt Police 1-1 Sharkia
