Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Peter Zhanero said the incident happened on Monday and identified the deceased as Merita Chigumira, of Rangarirai Village under Headman Madyangove.

He said the woman whose health was fast deteriorating had a misunderstanding with her daughter-in-law over her condition.

“On the fateful day Chigumira allegedly accused Ms Chiedza Chitokwi of the same area of causing her illness. Ms Chitokwi would have none of it and a misunderstanding ensued resulting in an exchange of harsh words,” said Insp Zhanero.

He said it was after the exchange of the harsh words that Chigumira decided to take her life.

“It is alleged that Ms Chitokwi’s response to the deceased did not go down well with her. It is further alleged that Chigumira went into her bedroom hut before closing the door. Ms Chitokwi did not check on her until at around 7pm when Chigumira’s sister, Ms Esinathi Chigumira arrived and went to the bedroom hut to see her sister.

“Upon opening the door, she found her sister’s body hanging from the roofing pole with a rope tied around her neck,” he said.

A report was made to the police who attended the scene.

Police found medical cards that were in the bedroom hut and they indicated that she was HIV positive.

“A postmortem was waived and the body is expected to be buried at Rangarirai Village, Headman Madyangove soon. No foul is suspected,” he said.
