SPORT and Recreation Minister Makhosini Hlongwane is this week expected to announce an interim Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) board following expiry of the Edward Siwela-led board’s term. There have been concerns about the delay in appointing a new SRC board, which is the supreme sports body in the country. Siwela’s board was given a three-month extension by Hlongwane in February, which came to an end in May. Other members of Siwela’s board comprise Dave Ellman-Brown, Jessie Nyakatawa, Ethan Dube, Miriam Mushayi, Obadiah Moyo, Aisha Tsimba and Farai Kanyangarara.

“Consultations are still going on and we’re now considering. Whilst consultations are going on, we’re putting in place an interim (board) so that it can deal with issues of licensing, registration and so forth, as the regulatory body. I know that in the next few days I’ll be pronouncing an interim board for the SRC,” said Hlongwane.

In terms of Section 5 of the SRC Act, the board shall consist of a chairman and not fewer than five and not more than nine other members appointed by the minister after consultation with the President and subject to such directions as the President may give him. There shall also be a director-general, who shall be an ex-officio member of the board.

“Members referred to in paragraph (a) of subsection (i) shall be appointed for their ability and experience in sport or administration or both or for their suitability otherwise for appointment. The members of the board shall elect a vice-chairman of the board from among themselves, and the vice-chairman shall exercise the functions of the chairman during any period that the chairman is unable to exercise his functions,” reads part of Section 5 of the SRC Act.
