BULAWAYO Provincial Minister of State Nomthandazo Eunice Moyo says her office has received an overwhelming response from companies seeking to join a government delegation that will visit China for investment talks next month. Macro-Economic Planning and Investment Promotion Minister Dr Obert Mpofu will lead the business delegation, drawn from different provinces, to the Asian economic giant to survey potential investment opportunities for the country.

Earlier, Minister Moyo said the Government had opened up 15 slots for Bulawayo businesses to travel with the provincial team to China. On Thursday, the minister’s office said 35 business persons had registered for the trip and 21 had attended a briefing with Moyo.

“There’s been a surprising response. I actually wasn’t expecting so many people. I think this will be a good experience for everyone. You’re very lucky to be going to a place which is heavily industrialised,” said Minister Moyo as she addressed business executives.

The meeting was attended by representatives from beverage makers, tourism, engineering, health and construction sectors among others. Absalom Sikhosana, who will be part of the delegation, commended the business people for showing interest in the trip.

The delegation will fund itself.

“China is the place to be because they’re now well advanced. Annually they develop a city that is almost the size of Bulawayo. What you’re doing here is planting a seed for the revival of Bulawayo as the industrial hub of the country. This will develop our city the way we want it to be,” Sikhosana said.

The delegation comprises officials from local authorities and provincial ministers, as well as members of the business fraternity. They are set to visit China from July 10 to 15.

The visit is set to provide a platform for the ministers, public and private sector players to interact and share ideas and experiences on Special Economic Zones. It will also provide an opportunity for business to business interface between Qingdao companies and their Zimbabwean counterparts.
