HOSTS Hwange failed to effectively dust themselves from the weekend’s shock 1-0 loss to new boys Mutare City Rovers when they shared the spoils with Chicken Inn in a Castle Lager Premiership game at the Colliery Stadium yesterday.

The coalminers had many opportunities to bag maximum points, especially in the opening half, but missed them.

The first realistic chance for Chipangano came in the 8th minute when Pritchard Mpelele and Pervington Zimunya combined well just outside the Gamecocks’ box only for the latter’s cheeky scissors kick to miss the left upright by a few inches.

Chicken Inn almost raced into the lead on the quarter hour mark after veteran striker Obidiah Tarumbwa sent in a delicate corner kick that was met with a glancing header by Devine Lunga, but found young Hwange goalkeeper Future Sibanda alert.

Hardly two minutes later, the young shot stopper proved why he has a bright future in-between the posts by denying winger George Majika from a one-on-one situation after being released by industrious midfielder Clemence Matawu in a swift counter attack.

Hwange youngsters Innocent Mucheneka and Mpelele took turns to smash their efforts against the crossbar in a space of a minute as the hosts turned the screws on Chicken Inn, who had simply switched off.

The second half saw both teams conspiring to treat fans to some uninspiring football with their lack of intent punctuated by numerous misplaced passes, leaving the crowd bored.

Two substitutes, Physiwell Madhazi and Gilbert Zulu for Chicken Inn and Hwange respectively, had chances to arouse the fans in the last quarter of the game but they both fluffed them.

Hwange came out of the draw with more headaches after referee Hardley Ndazi harshly gave central defender David Boriwondo a second yellow card deep into injury time.

Boriwondo will miss the away match to high-riding Caps United in the capital on Sunday.

Coach Mebelo Njekwa was furious after the match.

“We wasted lots of chances in the match and it has been the norm in our last games, but we’ve to work hard to improve. I’m not one to criticise referees, but I think the second yellow to Boriwondo was a bit harsh. However, such is football,” said Njekwa.

Chicken Inn boss Rahman Gumbo was happy with an away draw.

“The one point away from home isn’t bad, as we were also missing about four regular players today. We’re still work in progress and I’m sure we will get better,” he said.
