A Delta Beverages employee who operates in Gokwe yesterday appeared before Gweru Magistrate Sthembiso Ncube facing charges of illegal power connection.Pearson Matavire who resides at House Number 655/2 in Mkoba Village 13 Gweru pleaded guilty to contravening a section of the Zesa Act and was remanded out on $50 for trial to 2 August.

The complainant is Zesa represented by one of its employees, Gabriel Rupiza.

It is the state’s case that on May 28, 2014 around 9AM the complainant and his colleague Loveness Makahamadze were on duty inspecting Zesa prepaid meters. Chipo Matshe, the prosecutor told the court that when the complainant reached Matavire’s place of residence, he did the function test and discovered that electricity was illegally connected as there was power supply to the stove and refrigerator.

Rupiza noted that Matavire had illegally bypassed his prepaid meter by using a small electric cable to the breaker which supplied electricity to his stove and refrigerator. The complainant then removed the prepaid meter and the cables used to bypass the system.

A report was made to the police leading to the arrest of Matavire.
