BULAWAYO Theatre will play host to seven Imbube groups from the city as they show off their vocal and dancing prowess on stage so that people start to appreciate the genre.

The groups will be part of the second edition of the “Rise Up Chotoza Mfana Imbube Expo” this Saturday from 6PM to 10PM.

The groups that will be part of the extravaganza include award winning and globetrotting Black Umfolosi, Sunduza, Impumelelo Shining Stars, Great Stars, Ukukhanya Kwezwe, Men of Influence and Amaqhawe eNkosi.

Charles Banda from Sunduza, one of the organisers, said: “We realised that over the past years people aren’t taking imbube seriously. So we met up as groups of imbube in the city in order to revive the genre in Bulawayo and Zimbabwe so that people appreciate it.”

Black Umfolosi has in the past lamented that imbube was not appreciated locally as compared to overseas.

Banda said last year’s event was a success as people came out in support.

“We want this event to be one that will be held yearly. Our plan is to host international groups at the expo. After last year’s successful show we were spurred on to organise this one for this year,” said Banda.

Advance tickets for $2 are available at Enia Studios in the CBD, Magwegwe Youth Centre and Inyathi Youth Centre. Those who want to pay at the door will have to fork out $3.

Imbube groups in the city have churned out musicians such as Jeys Marabini who was part of Sunduza Boys at one point in his life.

Other groups who have brought a breath of fresh air include all female imbube group Nobuntu.

Rega Kusarira by Amabhubesi and Unity by Black Umfolosi are some imbube hits that have become part of the country’s music history.

Imbube is taken from the Zulu word “bhubesi” (lion), which describes the presentation of songs which are loud and powerful a capella four part harmonies, accompanied by dancing.

Imbube is a form of South African vocal music, made world famous by the South African group Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
