President Mugabe and First Lady Dr Grace Mugabe

IT’S a fact that behind every successful man is a strong and bold woman.

The case of Zimbabwe’s First Lady, Dr Grace Mugabe immediately comes to mind.

When she married Cde Mugabe at a ceremony held in the cool environs of Zvimba in 1996, the so-called political analysts were sceptical of the then 31-year-old First Lady’s capacity to continue supporting President Mugabe in his private and official capacity as Head of State and Government of the Republic of Zimbabwe.

Dr Mugabe’s impeccable character and solid advice to her husband stands as testimony to the true meaning of the above adage. She has been an exemplary figure that should be emulated by women who wish to enjoy marriage. Dr Mugabe has stood with her husband in both cloudy and glorious moments, in the process poking the loud-mouthed and doomsayers straight in their face. Recent events in the political landscape of Zimbabwe have unveiled the First Lady as a political gem, indeed a prized possession which stands to benefit the country in immeasurable ways.

When she was invited to lead the Zanu-PF Women’s League, people ran out of superlatives to describe her ingenuity and political clout.

Dr Mugabe’s track record speaks volumes of her empathy for the poor, the downtrodden and the despised. Danhiko Centre for the physically challenged used to face numerous challenges before Dr Mugabe became its patron. Today the story is different because of the many programmes she helped put in place to mobilise resources for the centre.

True, she is a champion whom the less privileged can lean on, they are indeed guaranteed support and like the the enthused Liverpool fans believe in, “ the less privileged at Danhiko and many other less privileged members of our society ‘Will never walk alone’ as long as she is there.

Dr Mugabe’s philanthropy has led her to create a home for abandoned children drawn from all corners of the country. The orphanage has conditions which are far better compared to other similar institutions and other institutions should therefore borrow a leaf.

The institution is also privileged with a state-of-the-art school which provides quality education for these once forsaken children who now have the First Lady as their only hope in life. It is only an extraordinary mind with a divine dimension which can undertake such a spiritually uplifting task. Surely, the whole nation of Zimbabwe can safely count itself lucky to have such a virtuous woman as their First Lady.

At the peak of the sanctions-induced hardships, Dr Mugabe went out of her way to source groceries for the entire country just for someone to have at least a decent meal. Zimbabweans will never forgive the MDCs in their various formations for campaigning for the sanctions which hit hard the ordinary Zimbabweans.

Zimbabweans shall forever be grateful to the First Lady’s kind gestures.

She showed a glimpse of the superb towering political figure she is during the 2008 Presidential election runoff when together with her iconic husband, President Mugabe, spearheaded the campaign which led to the humiliating defeat of the West’s stooge and shameless Trojan horse, the controversy-ridden, Morgan Tsvangirai.

The country’s independence was at stake hence the First Lady had to momentarily join the political field to defend the motherland.

This exhibited the other side of Dr Mugabe who eloquently narrated to the populace the importance of being ruled by a morally upright character in the mould of President Mugabe whose love for the country is admirable. As expected, Zimbabweans listened to the mother of the nation and endorsed President Mugabe as their leader. Zanu-PF Women’s League then made a loud statement of the First Lady’s impeccable political credentials when they invited her to lead them.

The humble figure of the First Lady deserves such recognition. The wedding of the First Family’s only daughter Bona is ample testimony to an able mother whose moral grounding is firm.

Indeed, the political field will never be the same with the arrival of Dr Mugabe who will certainly add value to the political discourse of this great nation.

May God continue to abundantly bless the country’s First Lady, Dr Grace Mugabe.
