THE blitz by the Bulawayo City Council to force motorists owing the local authority to pay for 148 000 outstanding  traffic  tickets amounting to $742 000 should be a warning to motorists to always observe traffic laws. If motorists are to avoid the inconveniences brought about by the blitz, they should do the right things on our city roads to make them safe and user friendly to all other road users.

CHINUA Achebe’s work showed how so-called Western civilisation reduced Africa to a horrifyingly barren land. Africans who are owners of the land are exhausted by years of back breaking work, work that is heavy and repetitive. This was because Africans have been taught by Western values that their rural cultures are backward and their tradition bad, many young Africans leave their villages behind. Yet they discover that the city, with its inherently rapid changes and isolation, all the hallmarks of modernity, provides no stability either.

THE decision by the European Union to remove its illegal sanctions on 81 individuals and eight companies while maintaining the embargo on 10 influential people, among them President Mugabe, the First Lady Amai Grace Mugabe, service chiefs and the war veterans leader, should be dismissed as a non-event. The EU should remove sanctions in toto if it wants to be taken seriously in its quest to rebuild trust and restore full diplomatic relations with Zimbabwe.
