registration for the annual Ingwebu National Tug-Of-War Championships has started and will close next week on Friday.
Zimbabwe Tug-of-War (Zitowa) secretary-general Jabulani Ngwenya urged all clubs to register in time for the tournament.
“The closing date for registration is April 11, so we are encouraging all clubs to register in time this year and we would be conducting a draw on April 17,” he said.

The finals will be at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) from April 22-26.
Registration fees are pegged at $20 per team with $1,800 up for grabs for the winners of the competition in the men’s category.
The runners-up will walk away with $1,200 while semi-finalists will receive $700 each.

The losing quarter-finalists will take home $400 apiece, with every team getting 10 T-shirts courtesy of Ingwebu Breweries.
In the women’s category, the winners will walk away with $400 while the runners-up will take away $200 and $100 for the two losing semi-finalists.

The competition is one of the biggest events on the Zitowa calendar and a crowd puller during Trade Fair.
Ingwebu, How Mine, PPC, Zesa, Hwange, Mutare Board and Paper Mills, Delta and Chikurubi Prison are the teams expected to grace this year’s event.

“We have three clubs registered so far, but we have made it mandatory for all the Southern Region teams to register for the tournament. If they don’t they will be barred from participating in the event,” said Ngwenya.

“Delta Bulawayo won the event last year and we want to keep the trophy in the region so we will go as a united front because the challenge is tough especially from Mutare team and FBC who emerged as a surprise package last year,” said Ngwenya.

Zitowa will also use this competition to prepare the team that will participate in South Africa in June.
“We have competitions lined up for South Africa in June, so the Trade Fair event will be a build up to the tour, as we will go as Team Zimbabwe,” said Ngwenya.
