NAAZ names Southern Region team

Sports Reporter

THE National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (NAAZ) has selected a 10member strong team that will represent the country at the Southern Region Cross — Country Championships to be held in Gaborone, Botswana on 25 February.

The athletes were selected after the Interprovincial Cross Country event that was held in Redcliff at the weekend where the 12km senior men’s event was won by Midlands athlete Wirimai Zhuwawo in a time of 41 minutes 22 seconds.
A total of 123 athletes took part with the women’s 8km race being clinched by Bulawayo’s Margaret Mahohoma in 32 minutes 10 seconds.
An official from NAAZ said they were taking only 10 athletes because of financial constraints.
“Due to the unavailability of funds Charles Soza and Tambudzai Mudzviti will be nontravelling reserves. The association is appealing to well wishers to assist the team with travel expenses and other logistical support. It is also likely that due to the same reasons the team may be trimmed further,” said William Chuwa, an official with NAAZ.
Mudzviti of Manicaland competed in the junior women’s category and finished third in 26 minutes three seconds while Soza of Manicaland also finished third in the senior men’s category in a time of 41 minutes 28 seconds.
Other athletes who were selected for the event include Kudakwashe Shoko of Masvingo who was second in Redcliff when he clocked 41 minutes 26 seconds and Chiedza Chokore of Harare (33 minutes 49 seconds).
Shoko and Chokore both came second in the senior men and senior women’s categories respectively. Varaidzo Shindi of Masvingo managed to retain her title at the same event when she romped home in 24 minutes 45 seconds with second placed Olivia Chitate (Harare) making it in 24 minutes 53 seconds.
