RENOWNED international eco-fashion designer, John Ablaza, who is known for his use of sustainable local materials in his designs, is holding workshops with local designers in Bulawayo. Ablaza who is in Africa for the first time, is a Manila-based designer whose awe-inspiring collections have graced the runways of Hong Kong, Singapore, London, Bahrain, Sydney and Toronto.

Ablaza yesterday held workshops that will end on Saturday at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Bulawayo with 55 designers, artisans, photographers and models. Accompanying Ablaza, who derives inspiration from nature, will be international fashion photographer Jhenny Morales Evans to also share her experience in fashion photography.

Hunnar Management Agency founder Gilmore Tee Moyo, who is organising the series of workshops, said they were excited to host Ablaza and Morales-Evans.

“We are really excited to be hosting John Ablaza and Jhenny Morales-Evans during their stay in Bulawayo. Participants for the series of workshops in Bulawayo are coming as far as Plumtree, Lupane, Matobo, Gweru and Victoria Falls. They should expect to gain so much knowledge, but should not be afraid to also share their experiences during the workshops”, said Gilmore Tee.

He said participants are expected to produce pieces and that will be showcased on August 4 in Harare as an end product of the workshops. Gilmore Tee said Ablaza has a passion of using local natural materials in coming up with high end fashion designs and Zimbabweans could learn a thing or two.

Ablaza is a designer that will be sure to impact his knowledge and appreciation of environmentally and socially responsible fashion. He is a designer who appreciates the environment, the people and the things that he sees around him every day whilst accommodating the different natural elements and turning these into fashion,” said Gilmore Tee.

Last week Ablaza was in Harare and held similar workshops at Harare Polytechnic College and Kusika Design Centre.

The renowned international designer is in Africa for the first time and was invited by the United States of America Embassy in Zimbabwe in partnership with Hunnar Management Agency, Zimbabwe International Film & Festival (ZIFF), ZedLabel, Mustard Seed Africa and KUSIKA Design Centre.
