DATES for the 2014 edition of the Intwasa Festival koBulawayo have been set and the organisers are calling on artistes to submit their applications to be part of the city’s biggest arts jamboree. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the multi-genre arts festival set to run between September 23 and 27 under the theme Unforgettable.

The festival showcases music, dance, fashion, poetry, visual arts, literary arts and film.
Director of the festival Raisedon Baya said preparations have started in earnest.

“This year, we are running under the theme Unforgettable. 2014 is a year to celebrate, a year in which Intwasa Arts Festival koBulawayo reaches a decade of bringing exciting arts events to the City of Bulawayo.

“To mark the anniversary, this year’s festival is going to be big and bold,” declared Baya.
The deadline for the submission of the applications is May 30.

Baya said entry forms were now available at Intwasa offices, National Arts Council of Zimbabwe, National Art Gallery, Amakhosi and Salukazi Arts Centre in Njube, Nhimbe Trust and online on the festival’s website.

Intwasa, which started in 2005 as a community arts festival has grown to become the second biggest arts event in Zimbabwe after the Harare International Festival of Arts, which remains the biggest in Zimbabwe.

It has also incorporated the youth, who are leaders of tomorrow through programmes such as Bulawayo’s Amazing Talents Show, Plan High School drama competition and short story writing competitions.

Held every last week of September in the cultural City of Kings and Queens, the festival’s timing and entertainment value is synonymous with the trends of the historic capital city of  the Ndebele Kingdom, where important festivals like Inxwala and Umthontiso were successfully held in spring in celebration of the growth of new life.

In the past nine years, the festival has hosted regional and international artistes from Botswana, Swaziland, South Africa, United States, UK, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Wales and Zambia.
