Prince “Oskid” Tapfuma

After a fruitful 2015 that saw him produce one of the year’s biggest hits in Winky D’s Disappear, Gweru-based producer Prince “Oskid” Tapfuma believes he is primed for more glory as the last year positioned him as one of the country’s hottest properties. Besides landing the producer of the year award at the recently held Zima awards for his work alongside Tamuka Makulumi on Kenako Muzik’s debut compilation, Oskid was also largely responsible for the multiple award winning exploits of Winky D and Killer T as he produced hit songs on the former’s Gafa Life Kickstape and the latter’s Ngoma Ndoimba.

After his sudden departure from the rapidly growing and successful Kenako brand, the 23 year old Oskid believes that his work in 2015 was just the tip of the iceberg.

While some would be worried about replicating the runaway success of last year, this is not so for Oskid who believes that as he was now working under improved conditions and thus is in a good position to better last year’s chart toppers.

“I’m not worried about anything because this is the year that I establish my dominance. I’ve already set down my mark and last year was just about laying the foundation for what I will do in future. People should look out for bigger and better things this year,” he said.

The young producer surprised a lot of people when he left the Kenako stable as many thought that the partnership between one of the country’s most sought after producers and rapidly growing stables was a foolproof formula for success. However, after claiming that the hit songs were not translating into money in the bank for him, Oskid left to carve his own path with his Diamond Dynasty imprint.

According to him, the journey has been smooth since his exit from Kenako in November. “Everything has been flowing beautifully and hopefully the results will be as lovely. I have felt free and I now work at the best of my abilities under what I believe is the best environment for me to produce quality work,” he said.

Named Oskid as a teenager because of his love of house beats by Kalawa Jazmee supremo Oskido, the Gweru born producer said that he could not rule out returning to his house music roots because he believes he is versatile enough to dabble in different genres.

“What people should know is that I’m not just a dancehall producer but I’m a music producer and that means I do all sorts of music. From dancehall to jazz and house I make it all and that also means that I have to listen to and learn from all these genres,” he said.

Oskid added that despite the success he got with Disappear from his collaboration with Winky D, he did not have a single track or artiste he could single out as his favourite to work with.

He added that his proposed collaboration with Nigeria’s Wizkid was still a work in progress. “I love all the songs like my children because I’m the one that made them. I’ve enjoyed working with all the artistes and I can’t point at one as my favourite,” he said.
