A JEALOUS man from Victoria Falls who bashed his heavily pregnant wife after suspecting that she was talking to a boyfriend on her mobile phone, was yesterday sentenced to three months in prison.

Zibusiso Mpala, 23, of Mkhosana suburb will, however, not taste jail life after the magistrate, Rangarirai Gakanje, commuted the sentence to 105 hours of community service.

Mpala was convicted of physically abusing his wife, Petunia Nyathi, 23, on his own plea of guilty and will perform the unpaid work at Baobab Primary School.

In defence, Mpala said: “I had no intention of hurting my wife. I was just angry because she had bitten me on the cheek. When I asked for her phone she refused and went on to bite my cheek.”

Prosecuting, Listen Nare told the court that on Saturday, Mpala assaulted his wife for refusing to give him her phone.

Appearing before the same court, was a 24-year-old woman who failed to accept the simple fact that her ex-husband had moved on and broke into his lodgings where she stole two cellphone handsets.

Nomusa Moyo was convicted of theft on her own plea of guilty and was sentenced to three weeks in jail. The magistrate however commuted the three-week jail sentence to 70 hours of community service at Chamabondo Primary School in Mkhosana.

The court heard that Moyo broke into her ex-husband, Nkosilathi Dube’s lodgings and stole the phones which she intended to use to track down his new lover.

The two cellphones were valued at $400 and they were both recovered.
