THE Judicial Service Commission (JSC) is working on introducing point of sale (POS) terminals at all the courts countrywide.
JSC secretary, Justice Rita Makarau said the move was in line with a Government directive that all government departments and parastatals must have these facilities by July 1.

She said the JSC was working with financial institutions for the installation of POS terminals at the courts.

“We’ve started putting the POS terminals in place.  Our bank, CBZ has indicated that it doesn’t have enough machines but are working flat out,” she said.

Justice Makarau said clients and litigants would use the POS terminals for bail deposits, fines, sheriff’s fees among other payments. She said it had been noted that people were failing to pay or deposit what was due to the court because of the cash crunch.

In a recent circular, the Ministry of Finance said all government institutions and departments are expected to have embraced plastic money by the end of last month.“Accounting officers are required to urgently arrange for departments and institutions under their purview to work with their bankers in introducing Point of Sale Machines to reduce usage by the public in transacting with government,” reads part of the circular signed by the Ministry’s secretary, Mr Willard Manungo.
