NEWLY appointed Judge, Justice Thompson James Mabhikwa, has been deployed to the High Court in Bulawayo while Justice Martin Makonese has been elevated to Senior Judge in-charge of the same court.

Justice Mabhikwa, who was sworn in last December by President Mnangagwa, replaces Justice Francis Bere who has been appointed Supreme Court judge while Justice Makonese takes over as head of the Bulawayo arm of the High Court.

In an interview yesterday, Judiciary Service Commission (JSC) Acting Secretary Mr Walter Chikwanha said Justice Mabhikwa’s appointment is with effect from June 1.

“Justice Mabhikwa has been re-deployed to the Bulawayo High Court and Justice Makonese is the new senior judge in charge of Bulawayo High Court.
Justice Mabhikwa moves to Bulawayo with effect from 1 June and Justice Makonese’s new role is with immediate effect,” he said.

Mr Chikwanha said Justice Bere immediately moved to the Supreme Court soon after he was sworn in by the Chief Justice two weeks ago.

Justice Mabhikwa, a seasoned lawyer from T J Mabhikwa and Partners law firm, was appointed High Court judge by President Mnangagwa together with seven other judges who underwent public interviews in October 2016.

He was based at the High Court in Harare since his appointment.

Justice Mabhikwa joins Justices Makonese, Nicholas Mathonsi, Maxwell Takuva and Nokuthula Moyo on the Bulawayo High Court bench.

Turning to the expansion of the High Court in Bulawayo, Mr Chikwanha said the project was expected to be complete in three months.

“We are expanding the Bulawayo High Court. If you go to the High Court now, work has started. We are creating four new courts in the basement of the High Court together with offices for members of staff.

“Expansion works have started and they are being done by the Department of Public Works. I’m expecting that within three months we will be done,” said Mr Chikwanha.
