Organisers revealed that preparations were going on well with various captains of industry from across the country having already confirmed participation.

The event is held to commemorate the 6 June, 1972 Kamandama Mine Disaster which claimed 427 lives while at the same time raising money for projects to be implemented by the Kamandama widows with some of it being used to establish scholarships for academically gifted but underprivileged children from Matabeleland North Province.

Hwange Golf Club captain and renowned engineer, Victor Rakabopa said yesterday that all was pointing to a good turnout, although he did not commit himself in terms of exact numbers.

“As you are aware the tragedy struck on the 6th of June 1972 which falls on Wednesday this year so as organisers, we have decided to have the golf tourney a day earlier, which is Tuesday.

“We have received quite a number of confirmations and pledges from various businesspeople, after all it’s all about the cause behind the event,” said Rakabopa.

Last year $17 000 was raised during the event and hopes are high that this year, an even bigger figure would be realised.

Last year’s tournament saw Hwange Colliery managing director Fred Moyo and his counterpart from Care Insurance Brokers, Innocent Nousenga coming first with 49 points followed by company secretary Thembelani Khole Ncube and his partner Khumbulani Chimiti who managed to get 47 points.

The tournament was graced by the Democratic Republic of Congo ambassador to Zimbabwe, Mwampanga Mwana Nanga who during his keynote address revealed that he was pleased to see the community coming together for a worthy cause through sport.

Rakabopa said the playing format would be a Four-Ball-Better Alliance.

Four Ball is a match pitting two teams of two players (a total of four balls being played, hence the name) against each other using better-ball scoring.

All four players play their own ball throughout, at the end of each hole, the low score between the two partners on each team is that team’s score.
