KARATEKA Samson Muripo is the odds on favourite to be named the Zimbabwe Sportsperson of the Year at tonight’s awards banquet in Harare.

Muripo’s profile has been growing and he recently attained a Fifth dan Karate Black Belt, which elevated him from a Sensei to a Master or a Shihan in India.

He attained the World Kyokushin Karate Championship in February, as he rose through the ranks to become a renowned karateka. In 2010, he won the World Kyokushin Karate Championship in Japan and went on to become the Sportsman and Sportsperson of the Year.

He was again one of the nominees in the Sportsman of the Year award this year, alongside fellow karateka Brian Chiringa and golfer Nyasha Machaza.

Muripo will join the elite ranks of legendary footballer Peter Ndlovu, tennis ace Cara Black and boxer Charles Manyuchi to win the prestigious Sportsperson of the Year Award more than once.

Manyuchi is the reigning Sportsperson of the Year. Tonight’s ceremony will also see winners in the Sports Administration of the Year, Sports Development of the Year, Women and Sports Awards, Special Acknowledgement Award and Junior Sportsperson of the Year.

The awards are organised to recognise and celebrate the highest sports accomplishments by athletes, administrators and technical officials.
